Lessons from the West African International Summer School for Young Astronomers

In October 2013 over 75 undergraduate science students and teachers from Nigeria and Ghana attended the West African International Summer School for Young Astronomers. The school was organized by a post doctoral fellow and three graduate students from the University of Toronto, along with staff from the Nigerian National Space Research and Development Agency. Instructors led activities which taught astronomy content and promoted studentsí technical skills and self-identity as scientists. I will discuss the innovative, inquiry-based, active learning techniques used in the school and share results from the qualitative and quantitative evaluations of student performance. I will also discuss the logistical difficulties and cultural differences that made planning a summer school in a developing country challenging.
